German Chancellor Angela Merkel (CDU) has just confirmed the measures already circulated to the press. According to this, a temporary lockdown from November 2 until the end of November was agreed upon together with the state premiers. Social contacts are to be greatly reduced: In public, only members of two households are allowed to meet – a maximum of ten people. Restaurants, beauty salons, massage parlors, tattoo studios and other cultural and leisure facilities will close for four weeks. Retail outlets, schools and kindergartens will remain open.

“These are stressful measures,” Merkel said. But they were aimed at restoring public life in Germany to a large extent in December. Two weeks after the new measures come into force, there will be renewed consultations with the federal states to determine whether the decisions will take effect or whether they need to be modified.
