The number of registered new corona infections in Germany has reached a new record of 16,774 cases within one day. The previous record value of the previous day was 14,964 cases. The numbers are also rising sharply in Sweden. In India, the mark of eight million corona cases was broken.
On Thursday a week ago, the health authorities in Germany reported 11,287 new infections. This was the first time since the beginning of the corona pandemic that the figure had exceeded the 10,000 mark in Germany. The current figures are only partly comparable with those from the spring, as considerably more tests are now being carried out and more infections are being detected.
Despite a quasi-lockdown, physicians fear a dramatic situation in German intensive care units within a few weeks. “It is already demonstrably worse than in spring,” says Uwe Janssens, President of the German Interdisciplinary Association for Intensive and Emergency Medicine. “In 14 days, we will have the serious cases of illness and our large centers will be under maximum load”.
After a peak of 2,129 new infections the day before, 3,254 new corona cases were added in Sweden within the past 24 hours on Thursday. State epidemiologist Anders Tegnell pointed out, however, that it could look as if Sweden has more cases than in spring. But this is not true, he stressed. The spread in the population had been many times greater at that time, he said, but they did not have the same testing capacity then as they do today.
In the Corona crisis, Sweden took a much-noticed special path with less strict restrictions. In spring, the EU country had recorded significantly higher infection and death rates than the rest of Scandinavia. The current level of new infections in Sweden is lower than in other parts of Europe when compared to the European population but lower than in other parts of Europe.
In Italy, the number of Covid-19 infections is also continuing to rise. On Thursday 26,831 new infections were reported. 217 deaths were registered, compared to 205 the day before.
While protests are underway throughout Italy against the “mini-lockdown” imposed by the government, head of government Giuseppe Conte called on the Italians on Thursday to stick together and defend his anti-Covid measures. “This is the time when we must remain united,” said the non-party prime minister.
Meanwhile India broke through the eight million corona cases mark. The second largest nation in the world thus also has the second highest infection rate after the USA with 8.8 million infections. Within one day, the authorities reported 49,881 new infections. According to official figures, the number of deaths in India rose by 517 to 120,527.
Due to a sharp increase in new corona infections, Bulgaria is restricting public life for two weeks starting Thursday. High schools and universities must now switch to distance learning. Sports events may only be organized without an audience. In nightclubs such as discotheques and bars, the interiors must remain closed.
The Greek government ordered a lockdown for the cities of Thessaloniki, Larisa and Rodopi in central and northern Greece. As with the outbreak of the pandemic in spring, Greece must take harder and faster measures than other countries to prevent the worst and reduce the pressure on the health system, said Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis on Thursday afternoon in Athens.
