In view of rising infection figures, Portuguese President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa has once again declared a health emergency. In a television address yesterday, de Sousa said he had signed a decree that would put the state of emergency into effect starting next week. This is a “very limited and largely preventive measure,” the president stressed.
However, the state of emergency allows the government to impose new measures to contain the pandemic, de Sousa continued. As an example he cited traffic restrictions.
The parliament in Lisbon had approved the imposition of the health emergency by a large majority. Among other things, a nationwide night-time curfew and public fever measurements in certain places are being discussed. Since Wednesday, more than seven million Portuguese have been subject to a partial lockdown. Residents of the affected communities may only leave their homes for compelling reasons, such as to go to work or school.
