The number of confirmed coronavirus infections in the EU and other European countries has doubled to more than ten million within only three and a half weeks. By Friday, a total of 10,124,110 cases had been reported in the European Economic Area including the UK. This is almost 242,000 more than the day before. It was only on October 20 that the mark of five million proven infections was exceeded.
According to the daily survey of the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC), most infections have now been registered in France (1,898,710). Spain (1,437,220), Great Britain (1,290,195) and Italy (1,066,401) also have seven-digit figures. Germany, another country with a large population, follows in fifth place with more than 750,000 cases, Austria in twelfth place with 182,062 infected persons so far.

In the 14-day incidence per 100,000 inhabitants, Austria was in the negative top group with 969.2 cases, led by Luxembourg (1,327.4), the Czech Republic (1,282.7) and Liechtenstein (1,143.9). Austria is already in fourth place, just ahead of Slovenia (969.0) and Belgium (947.0).

In the entire region observed by ECDC, there have been about 258,000 deaths related to Covid-19 diseases so far. Austria is currently in the European midfield with 5.0 covid deaths per 100,000 inhabitants within 14 days. The Czech Republic (27.2), Belgium (22.0) and Hungary (12.1) show the highest values.

In addition to the 27 EU states, Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein are also part of the economic area. The ECDC also includes the former EU member Great Britain. On the other hand, Switzerland with its approximately 250,000 confirmed corona cases is not included.

The European corona figures are significantly higher for the WHO Regional Office for Europe, which includes a total of 53 countries in the European region. The number of confirmed infections in the WHO region on Friday was just under 14.2 million, and the death toll was almost 330,000.
