Russian President Vladimir Putin has expressed concern about the sharp rise in the number of deaths among coronavirus patients in Russia. The authorities reported 456 deaths today – more than ever before in one day since the beginning of the pandemic in Russia.
As recently as spring, Russia had caused a sensation in an international comparison with low death rates. Putin had called this a success of his policy. The number of newly infected people was today put at 20,985. 34,387 people have died with the virus so far. The mortality rate is currently at 1.73 per cent, it was said.
The president, who works almost exclusively from his Moscow suburban residence Novo-Ogarjovo, spoke in a video conference broadcast on TV of a situation that is “manageable” overall. In some regions, however, the situation was difficult. The 68-year-old criticized that it takes too long for test results to be available – on average about 48 hours.
Deputy head of government Tatyana Golikova said that in some regions there were hardly any free hospital beds left. The overall occupancy rate in Russia is 81 percent. She announced that in November 653,000 doses of the Russian vaccine “Sputnik V” would be on the market – and in December already 2.2 million. Russia has more than 140 million inhabitants.
