The 100-inhabitant community of Fucking in Upper Austria is known worldwide because of its name. Fucking has received so much attention over the years – and caused so many bad jokes and rather unwanted visitors from the residents.
New name from 1 January 2021
The Tarsdorf municipal council decided on November 17, 2020, the name Fucking will disappear from the place name signs, at the request of the population. “The local council has decided to rename the village Fucking to the place name Fugging with effect from 01 .01.2021.”
According to daily news “diePresse”, Mayor Andrea Holzner (ÖVP) confirms decision of the local council. It is known that there has already been more than enough media hype about the place name.
Although Fucking is only a small district of the cadastral community Hofstatt in the municipality of Tarsdorf (district Braunau am Inn), the Upper Austrian village is world-famous because of its name. After the name had spread first in foreign media and then on social networks, tourists came in droves to have their pictures taken in front of the village signs. Because the signs were also stolen en masse, they were set in concrete and welded.
Even porn sites became attentive
In addition to the registration of the beer brand name “Fucking Hell”, the crime thriller called “Bad Fucking”, including later theatrical performances and film adaptation, attracted even more attention. The Amazon series “The Grand Tour”, known for car experiences all over the world, also made a stopover in Fucking. Eventually even one of the world’s largest porn sites became aware of the small town and offered all residents free access to its premium services.
