Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore reported a new record in new coronavirus infections in the USA on Friday. Within 24 hours, 217,664 new confirmed cases were registered. The highest figure to date was registered last Friday with around 205,000 new cases. The number of deaths reported within one day also reached a new high of 2804.

After last week’s Thanksgiving holiday, experts had expected a nationwide increase in infections. The CDC had strongly discouraged family visits and travel in advance. However, many people did not follow this advice.

At Thanksgiving, many Americans traveled across the country despite the Corona pandemic. This is likely to have pushed up the number of infections again.

Tougher measures in California
In the most populous state of California, tougher measures will help in the fight against the pandemic. For example, in regions where intensive care units are threatened with overcrowding, curfews and other conditions are being tightened.

A total of more than 13.9 million people in the country of 330 million inhabitants have been infected with the coronavirus. Since the beginning of the pandemic, more than 273,000 people have died with the pathogen SARS-CoV-2, which is more than in any other country in the world in absolute numbers.
