On the day before the end of the tough lockdown, Chancellor Sebastian Kurz (ÖVP) appealed to the population to comply with the measures still in force. Only in this way could the positive development continue, said the head of the VP. The good news for Kurz is that the lockdown has taken effect. In recent weeks, the average daily number of new infections has been cut in half. The remaining measures are “without alternative”.
This development has led to the fact that the acutely imminent overflow of intensive care units has been prevented. The 7-day incidence in Austria has fallen from 522 to 263 (per 100,000 inhabitants). At the beginning of the lockdown, the average daily incidence of new infections was 6,639, now it is 3,346. The reproduction rate could be reduced from 1.13 to 0.81. It indicates how many people an infected person infects.
This progress should not be put at risk, the head of government asks. The remaining measures – such as a night-time curfew, contact restrictions and closed restaurants and tourist beds – have no alternative. Together with the mass tests, they created the possibility of bringing the infection under control as much as possible. In the process, Kurz once again advocates participating in the tests, which have so far been sparsely attended: “Because 15 minutes of quick testing can save us all many weeks of lockdown.
At the same time, the Chancellor once again assured that there was light at the end of the tunnel: “The development and approval of the vaccines is progressing rapidly and preparations to use these vaccines in our country as early as January are in full swing.
