The Corona mass tests came to an end on Sunday in many states. Less than one percent of the participants were positive.
In Vienna, Lower Austria, Burgenland, Salzburg, Carinthia and Styria there was still the last opportunity to be tested on Sunday. In Upper Austria, mass testing will continue until Monday. The percentage of positive results has been low so far.
In Carinthia it was 0.5 percent, in Styria 0.4 percent tested positive. In Vienna and Upper Austria the rate was 0.3 percent, in Lower Austria only 0.14 percent.
The crowds to the respective testing stations varied, but were rather low throughout Austria. The government had hoped for around 50 percent participation. In Vorarlberg, the figure was 31 percent, in Tyrol 33 percent.
Just over 22 percent took up the test offer in Upper Austria, which corresponds to just under 270,000 people (out of 1.2 million); 975 people were positive and still had to take a PCR test.
In Lower Austria, 742 of around 520,000 tests were positive, and the participation rate was 34 percent. In Vienna, the willingness to participate was not particularly high, only slightly more than ten percent of the Viennese went to the test. This involved 204,880 rapid antigen tests and 1,308 gargle tests.
The capacities at the three sites in Vienna were designed for a participation rate of up to 60 percent or 1.2 million people. On average, 23,000 people were tested per day.
In Styria, around 240,000 people took part, of which just under 900 samples taken produced a positive result. The participation rate in the southern province was 20 percent.
On Saturday, there was another breakdown, the test persons had to wait longer for their results, “Heute” reported. The second round of mass testing is to take place between January 8 and 10. For this, new incentives are to be created to convince more participants. There has already been talk of a 50-euro voucher.
Tyrol wants to carry out mass tests permanently and free of charge in the future. Salzburg is also considering extending the voluntary tests. In total, around 40,000 people had themselves tested in Salzburg. Of them, 160 were provisionally registered as positive, which is a proportion of 0.4 percent.
Upper Austria is also offering free tests before Christmas. Governor Thomas Stelzer (ÖVP) and Health Minister Christine Haberlander (ÖVP) have commissioned the crisis team to develop a concept, as the state announced in a statement on Sunday afternoon.
“With this, we want to make Christmas as safe and familiar as possible,” emphasized the governor and his deputy.
