India recorded 26,355 new coronavirus cases, health ministry data showed Wednesday. This marked the third consecutive day that daily infections in the country remained below 30,000. The number of deaths rose by 360, bringing the total to 144,069, it said.
India, with a population of nearly 1.4 billion, has recorded 9.93 million infections to date, the second highest rate in the world after the United States. However, daily numbers have steadily declined since reaching a peak of about 97,000 in mid-September. The average number of COVID-19 deaths reported daily in India has fallen for 10 consecutive days, according to a Reuters tally.
Situation in China
The vaccine, produced in partnership between the U.S. drugmaker and the German biotech company, is to be used in China next year. At least 100 million doses will be imported by Shanghai Fosun Pharma following successful approval of the vaccine in the People’s Republic, the Chinese Biontech partner announced.
For the first 50 million doses, Fosun Pharma would make a down payment of 125 million euros. The Beijing government has not yet announced any supply agreements with Western drugmakers.
Costa Rica is approving the use of the Covid-19 vaccine developed by Pfizer and Biontech for emergency use, according to health officials. The country thus joins the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Bahrain, Mexico, Saudi Arabia and Singapore, which had already granted emergency approval for the vaccine.
