Since Thursday, speculation has been rife again about a new hard lockdown starting on St. Stephen’s Day. Almost all the Austrian online news portals report about this scenario. On Friday at 3 p.m., the government will meet the provincial governors as well as experts to discuss possible tightening – after which further details are to be announced. A press statement is planned.
In the Ministry of Health, one is concerned due to the new infection figures that have not continued to fall in recent days. Also the situation on the intensive care units is still tense. In any case, a new protective measure regulation will be necessary from December 26. This must be decided namely every ten days by the main parliament committee.

218 Corona deaths in 24 hours?
In fact, new infections have been holding at a high level for days. After 2664 on Wednesday, 2485 Corona cases were registered within one day on Thursday. On the other hand, there was a major outlier in the death toll: Health and Interior Ministries reported 218 Corona deaths within 24 hours on Thursday. Vienna alone accounted for 135 – though 120 of these were follow-up reports from the previous two months. The reason: The difference between the numbers of the Viennese authorities and those of the Agency for Food Safety (Ages) had become so large that the federal capital had decided to adopt the higher number of the Ages.

More subsequent reports expected
The Ministry of Health points out that such subsequent notifications must be expected again in the coming days. As a result, it is hardly possible to provide a correct daily update. In any case, the adoption of the Ages figures for Viennese deaths should prevent unnecessary confusion and inconsistencies in the future.
