Health authorities in Germany have reported 31,300 new infections to the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) within one day. Yesterday, there had been a peak with 33,777 reported infections, but this included about 3,500 subsequently reported cases from the previous day. On Saturday of last week, the number had been 28,438.

German health authorities also reported 702 new deaths within one day. The previous high of 952 deaths had been reached on Wednesday. The trend had been upward recently in the number of daily deaths, which was expected after the steep rise in new infections. The total number of people who have died from or with the involvement of a confirmed infection with Sars-CoV-2 rose to 25,640.

In total, the Robert Koch Institute counts 1,471,238 confirmed infections with Sars-CoV-2 in Germany since the start of the pandemic (as of 12/19, 00:00). According to estimates, around 1,085,500 people have now recovered. The number of new infections reported to public health authorities within seven days per 100,000 population (7-day incidence) was reported today by the RKI as 189.6. This is the highest level since the beginning of the pandemic. Germany has about 83 million inhabitants.
