According to Prime Minister Boris Johnson, initial findings indicate that the new variant of the coronavirus discovered in Great Britain is significantly more contagious than the known form. But there is no evidence that vaccines are less effective, Johnson told reporters and journalists in London today. Because of the coronavirus mutation, however, the government tightened restrictions on London significantly from tomorrow. “If the virus changes its method of attack, we will have to change our method of defense,” Johnson said.
The previously three-phase coronavirus alert system has now been expanded to four – which includes other regions in the southeast besides the capital. Residents there are now only allowed to leave their homes for important reasons, such as to go to the doctor and to work. Nor are they allowed to meet relatives of other households at Christmas, Johnson said.
“We can’t spend Christmas as planned.” All non-essential businesses, as well as other establishments such as gyms and beauty salons, will have to close. Residents in the highest coronavirus level four will not be allowed to leave the zone.
