After the hard lockdown on January 17, 2021, there will be an opportunity to take part in events or visit stores and restaurants by means of Corona tests. However, the control of compliance with these rules will not normally be carried out by the police. In an interview conducted by the Austrian Press Agency (APA), the Interior Minister Karl Nehammer recognizes here primarily the responsibility of the operators themselves as well as for instance the chamber of economics or the labor inspectorate.

The Minister does not want to completely rule out the possibility that the executive will also have to intervene here from time to time. It could be that the health authorities ask the police to carry out spot checks. In principle, however, the police will only be called out if there is an escalation – for example, if a person refuses to leave a place even though he or she has not passed a Corona test.

When it comes to contact tracing, Nehammer also says that the police will only help out in the event of special challenges in a federal state. According to his own information, the federal states have strengthened their teams accordingly and thus proceed independently. The executive is heavily involved in quarantine monitoring. Here there have already been over 300,000 checks, reports the Minister of the Interior. As far as New Year’s Eve celebrations are concerned, Nehammer announced that the provincial police directorates would be focusing their activities.
