▶ Kickoff for high-risk group on January 5 ▶ 5000 additional doses procured ▶ Universal registration system coming
The city of Vienna is now pushing the pace for Corona vaccinations: from January 5, the first phase will start for the high-risk group in old people’s and nursing homes as well as in the Covid wards of hospitals – a week ahead of other provinces. “There is nothing to wait for,” explains City Health Councillor Peter Hacker (SPÖ).
Currently, 2040 people in Vienna have been vaccinated. In order to continue earlier, the city has procured an additional tranche of 5000 doses. Before the large-scale start in Austria, 7040 people will then already have been vaccinated in Vienna. Hacker doesn’t want to lose any time: “Every person who is vaccinated in a nursing home, for example, is one severe course less.” This would not only save lives, but also massively relieve the hospitals. Only with enough free hospital beds could triage be permanently prevented.
Vaccination sequence is carefully planned
Preparations are well underway. The mass vaccination will take place in four phases.
- The first phase is for the high-risk group: residents and staff in retirement and nursing homes, as well as staff in the Covid wards of hospitals.
- The second phase involves the extended risk group with care facilities, police or Viennese over 70 years of age.
- This is followed by the general risk group, which includes critical infrastructure (ÖBB, Wiener Linien, etc.), teachers or the catering industry.
- This is followed by all persons not yet covered.
From mid-January, all Viennese can register with a general registration system. If the appropriate group comes to the vaccination, there is a notification, with which also immediately an appointment can be agreed upon.
