More than 18,000 people in Germany have been infected with the corona virus within 24 hours. Health offices reported 18,678 new corona infections to the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) within 24 hours, the RKI announced early Saturday. This brought the number of known cases since the start of the pandemic to 2,019,636 (as of January 16, 00:00).
Just the day before, 22,368 new infections had been reported. It should be noted that the actual total number is likely to be significantly higher, as many infections are not detected.
In addition, 980 new deaths were recorded within 24 hours. The previous high of 1,244 new deaths had been reached on Thursday. In terms of new infections registered within 24 hours, the highest figure of 33,777 had been reported on December 18 – but this included 3,500 subsequent reports.
The number of new infections per 100,000 inhabitants reported to health authorities within seven days (seven-day incidence) was 139.2 on Saturday morning, having reached its previous high of 197.6 on December 22. Nationwide, the seven-day incidence has fallen slightly in recent days, according to RKI data released Friday.
