Covid-19 is already the leading cause of death in the United States. As of Friday, 3,744 victims of the pandemic were recorded nationwide. For eight months, Covid-19 deaths ranked third among causes of death in the United States – after heart disease and cancer, the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) now reported. The situation is currently spiraling out of control in regions like Southern California.
Southern California, with the Los Angeles metropolitan area and a population of about ten million (LA County), had apparently weathered the initial flare-up of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic well last spring. But the situation is different now. According to U.S. experts, the metropolitan areas and poverty in Southern California are the driving forces behind the development. In and around Los Angeles, with the largest proportion of people of Latino background, the Covid 19 death rate would have increased eightfold within a few months.
The situation in California basically represents the situation nationwide in the United States. “The daily death toll from Covid-19 is similar to that of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attack that took 2,988 lives. Or they are similar to the daily crash of 15 Airbus 320 passenger planes with 150 people on board each day,” experts wrote in JAMA.
