More than four million people in the UK have now been vaccinated against the coronavirus. Twice as many people are currently being vaccinated as in any other country in Europe, said British Health Minister Matt Hancock. More than half of those over 80 and half of nursing home residents have already received a dose, he said. “We know that every shot counts,” Hancock said.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson expressed cautious optimism during a visit to vaccine maker AstraZeneca, saying the country remains in a “pretty dicey” situation. Johnson announced that the Corona measures would be slow to be lifted. “You can’t just open up with a “Sesame, open up,” the government leader said. The government wants to vaccinate all at-risk groups – the elderly, nursing home residents and vulnerable caregivers – about 15 million people by mid-February. An inventory could be made in mid-February, he said.

As for the hospital situation, Hancock stressed that the pressure on the health system is still high. Currently, 37,400 Corona patients are being treated in hospitals, more than ever before, he said. “Every 30 seconds, someone is taken to a hospital,” Hancock said.
