In Germany, more than 50,000 people have died in connection with the corona virus since the pandemic began. German health authorities reported 859 new deaths to the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) within 24 hours, the RKI announced Friday morning. This brought the total number of deaths to 50,642, up from 1,113 new deaths within 24 hours exactly a week ago.

The peak of 1,244 new deaths had been reached on January 14. The RKI counts as Covid 19 deaths proven infected people who died directly from Corona and those with pre-existing conditions where the cause of death cannot be conclusively determined. It is at the discretion of the health department whether to report a case to the RKI as having died “from” or “with” Covid-19. Researchers believe that the number of Covid-19 deaths would be many times higher without the Corona restrictions.

Health departments also reported 17,862 new Corona infections to the RKI within one day. Exactly one week ago, the RKI had recorded 22,368 new infections. The peak of 33,777 registered new infections within 24 hours had been reported on December 18 – but this included 3,500 subsequent reports.

The number of new infections reported within seven days per 100,000 population (seven-day incidence) was 115.3 on Friday morning, according to the RKI. Its previous high had been 197.6 on Dec. 22. The figure fluctuated thereafter and has been falling again for several days. However, the differences between the states remain large: the highest incidences have Thuringia with 218.4 and Brandenburg with 194.4. The lowest value has Bremen with 80.9.

The RKI counts more than 2.1 million detected infections with Sars-CoV-2 in Germany since the beginning of the pandemic (as of Jan. 22, 00:00). The actual total number is likely to be much higher, as many infections are not detected. The RKI gave the number of recovered with about 1 780 200.

The Germany-wide seven-day R value was 0.93 (previous day: 0.87), according to the RKI situation report Thursday evening. This means that 100 infected people mathematically infect 93 other people. The value represents in each case the infection occurrence 8 to 16 days ago. If it is below 1 for a longer period of time, the incidence of infection is decreasing.
