The Merkur supermarket chain will become part of the Billa family! The new name of the stores and what the customers expect will be known in April.
According to the Austrian free newspaper “Heute” the Austrian supermarket chain, which belongs to the German Rewe Group and has been operated by Billa AG since August 2020, will become part of the Billa family. From April, the stores will be renamed “Billa Plus”.
“Two strong sales formats that have been successful for decades are now moving even closer together, can support each other even better and act in a more targeted manner in the range of products for our customers,” according to an internal letter to employees.
Customers would want “pinpoint shopping experiences,” the right prices for them, exactly the selection and the service they need for their very individual groceries – and that “always, immediately, in the store as well as online,” it continues.
But what exactly will change from April? In addition to a new name (“Billa Plus”) and a new brand, the stores will also get a new color or packaging. The employees’ clothing will also change. Although the principle remains the same, green items will be yellow, as is already the case at Billa.
However, the range of services and the “Merkur experience” will remain the same and will even be expanded. However, the cooperation is to become even closer and the exchange even more intensive, for example in the case of mutual help when personnel is needed.
In the future, Merkur and Billa Plus will continue to rely on a “strong and clear price and promotion policy” and on “understandable and attractive discounts. In addition, the company wants to make even greater use of regional products and combine the “best of our worlds,” for example with a broader range of organic products.
