Hungary has become the first European Union country to approve the Chinese CoV vaccine. The National Institute of Pharmacy and Nutrition has given its approval for the vaccination of Sinopharm’s vaccine, the head of Hungary’s health authority, Cecilia Muller, said today. Hungary’s Prime Minister Viktor Orban announced he himself would be vaccinated with the Chinese drug.
He has “the most confidence” in Sinopharm, Orban said. “I will wait for my turn, and when the time comes, I will choose the Chinese vaccine.” Justifying his decision, the head of government said the Chinese have “the longest experience with the virus, so they are probably the best informed.”
Hundreds of thousands of vaccine doses ordered
Hungary plans to sign a contract with the Chinese manufacturer today or tomorrow, Orban elaborated. His office manager Gergely Gulyas, had said the previous day that Hungary had already ordered 500,000 vaccine doses from Sinopharm before the official approval.
The Hungarian government wants to accelerate the vaccination campaign. In the future, every vaccine that has already been vaccinated more than one million times is to receive approval. Last week, Hungary granted provisional emergency approval for the Russian vaccine “Sputnik V” and ordered two million doses of it.
