German health departments have reported 4535 new Corona infections to the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) within one day. In addition, 158 new deaths were recorded within 24 hours, according to figures released by the RKI on Monday. Exactly a week ago, the RKI had recorded 5608 new infections and 175 new deaths within 24 hours. The recorded case numbers are usually lower on Mondays, partly because less testing is done on weekends.
The peak of 1244 new reported deaths had been reached on January 14. The highest number of new infections registered within 24 hours, 33,777, was reported on December 18 – but this included 3,500 subsequent reports.
Seven-day incidences continue to fall, with the number of new infections per 100,000 population reported within seven days at 76 as of Monday morning, according to the RKI. Its previous high had been 197.6 on Dec. 22. Most states continue to report declining incidences, according to the RKI.
In total, the RKI now counts 2,288,545 detected infections with Sars-CoV-2 in Germany since the beginning of the pandemic (as of 08.02., 00.00). The actual total number is likely to be much higher, as many infections are not detected. The total number of people who died from or involved a confirmed infection with Sars-CoV-2 rose to 61,675, and the RKI reported the number of those who recovered at approximately 2,041,300.
The nationwide seven-day R value was 0.94 (previous day 0.95), according to the RKI situation report Sunday evening. This means that 100 infected people mathematically infect 94 other people. The value represents in each case the infection occurrence 8 to 16 days ago. If it is below 1 for a longer period of time, the incidence of infection is decreasing.
