We stayed for two days in Moab, enjoying a welcome break from camping. Gabi had reserved a wonderful lodge for us—a simple yet fully equipped place featuring air conditioning, running water, a refrigerator, and wonderfully cozy beds that felt like absolute luxury after days in a tent.
Exploring a Secret Waterfall
On our first full day in Moab, we embarked on an adventurous hike to a hidden, beautiful spot located about five kilometers outside the city: a secluded natural waterfall.
The History & Story: Gabi and Steven had visited this exact spot four years prior and were eager to share it with us. At first, walking out to the remote location gave us a bit of an uncertain, eerie feeling, as we were the absolute only visitors there, far away from the main tourist paths and bustling streets.
The Reward: All hesitation melted away once we arrived. The view of the cascading water nestled against the desert landscape was stunning, and we even bravely swam in the refreshingly cold water.
Evening Wind-Down: In the afternoon, we returned to our lodge to rest our tired muscles. For dinner, we visited a local Thai restaurant, followed by a relaxed evening walk around the lively downtown streets of Moab.
Arches National Park: Sculpted by Time
On our final morning in Moab, we visited the world-famous Arches National Park.
History & Geology: Established as a national monument in 1929 and later designated a national park in 1971, Arches protects over 2,000 natural sandstone arches. This geological wonderland was formed over 300 million years ago when an underground sea evaporated, leaving behind a thick layer of salt. Over immense spans of time, subterranean salt movement, intense pressure, and millions of years of relentless wind, rain, and freezing temperatures eroded the overlying sandstone, carving out the dramatic fins, spires, and delicate arches we see today.
Our Hike: We took a nearly three-hour hike through the park, marveling at the sheer beauty and intricate details of the rock formations standing proudly against the blue desert sky.
Journey to the Black Canyon
By 1:00 PM, we packed up our things, left Moab behind, and hit the road to proceed toward our final major destination of the entire road trip: the breathtaking Black Canyon of the Gunnison in Colorado.
