The number of coronavirus deaths in Brazil has exceeded the threshold of 250,000. According to the Ministry of Health in Brasilia today, 1,541 new infections with the coronavirus were registered within 24 hours. The total number of infections since the beginning of the pandemic thus rose to 251,498.
Brazil is the country with the second highest number of coronavirus deaths in the world, after the United States. In the United States, the threshold of half a million deaths had been exceeded on Monday.
First infection a year ago
A year ago, on February 26, 2020, the first case of infection had been recorded in Brazil. The patient at the time was a businessman from Sao Paulo who had returned from a trip to Italy.
Since then, the virus has spread rapidly in the most populous and largest Latin American country by area. More than 10.3 million cases of infection have been recorded in the country since the pandemic began. In the statistics of cases of infection, Brazil ranks third in the world behind the United States and India.
