2,324 new infections were registered in Austria from Wednesday to Thursday, 2,688 from yesterday to today. This is a huge number, Austria’s Health Minister Rudolf Anschober commented on the development yesterday. Equally too high are the recent almost constant increases of over 2,000 infections daily, the health minister said.
While a few weeks ago it was said that the rising number of infections was due to increased testing, this is no longer true. According to Anschober, we are dealing with an “actual increase” in the number of infections, which is also threatening to affect hospitals. The British mutant is also increasingly catching on; B.1.1.7. must be regarded as a “pandemic within the pandemic.” The infection rate of the mutant is 23 percent higher in Austria, according to the report, on average, one person proven to be infected with B.1.1.7 infects more than one additional person.
Anschober also presented a forecast: On March 10, one would end up with 3,200 additional cases per day. That would probably mean the end for the planned relaxations.
