Hungary today recorded another dramatic increase in CoV new infections and victims. In the neighboring country of around ten million people, 6,494 new infections were registered in the past 24 hours. 158 people died in connection with the virus. Yesterday, a tighter lockdown was imposed in Hungary until March 22.
A total of 16,146 deaths have now been recorded, Hungarian news agency MTI reported. There were 8,270 CoV patients in hospitals, with 833 requiring artificial respiration.
Slavik: Third wave brings hospitals to limits
The third wave is pushing hospitals to their limits, said Janos Slavik, an infectiologist at Budapest’s Del-Pest Center Hospital. All beds reserved for Covid 19 patients have been exhausted, he said, and the hospital’s intensive care unit is also under heavy strain.
Across the country, more and more people are being admitted to hospitals, and the need for artificial respiration is increasing. A new phenomenon is that CoV infects whole families and more young people are brought to the hospitals.
Slavik urged Hungarians on the radio to get vaccinated. So far, he said, more than a million people have been immunized. But two to two-and-a-half million vaccinated people are needed to curb the pandemic, he said.
According to media reports, some Austrians would like to be vaccinated in Hungary with the Russian vaccine “Sputnik V”. The Hungarian embassy in Vienna has rejected such requests, the online portal Index.hu reported. In Hungary, only people with Hungarian social insurance received a vaccination.
