The mask obligation in the open air on busy squares comes, as Viennese Mayor Michael Ludwig has announced. Today the starting signal falls at five places within the city.

In these five places, every passerby must wear an FFP2 mask starting today:
▶ Danube Canal
▶ Karlsplatz
▶ Museumsquartier
▶ Schwedenplatz
▶ Stephansplatz.

The beautiful weather ensures that these places in the fresh air have been literally stormed during the past days. This gives the government a headache in view of the rising Corona numbers. In addition to the “Easter rest” in eastern Austria, which has also been in effect since today, including a hard lockdown, the FFP2 mask requirement is also being applied there. This applies for the time being until April 11.
“The very serious situation in intensive care units in particular requires me to act quickly and decisively. After all, the safety and health of the population is my top priority,” explains City Chief Ludwig.

Clear signage, police checks
Those public areas where mouth-nose protection must be worn outdoors will be clearly signposted. In addition, police will be on site with the Office of Immediate Response (Magistrate) for focus checks. “We are implementing this to tighten up existing rules and reduce the incidence of infection,” the mayor of vienna said. Further tightening to push the Corona numbers are not excluded.
