A new study from Israel shows the need for a second vaccination with Biontech/Pfizer’s Corona vaccine to further curb the corona virus. The vaccine manufacturer and the Ministry of Health in Israel studied the protective effect of the Biontech vaccine after the first and second vaccination.
According to the study, between seven and 14 days after receiving the first dose, the Biontech vaccine showed a protective effect of 58 percent against reinfection, 76 percent against hospitalization and 77 against death. Seven days after receiving the second vaccination, the risk of coronavirus infection, hospitalization and death are each reported to be reduced by 95 percent.
Corona vaccination: duration of immunity still unclear
The authors of the study, published in the journal The Lancet, point out that little is yet known about the duration of effectiveness of the first Corona vaccination. Accordingly, receiving only one vaccination could mean a shorter period of protection. Still unclear is the question of the duration of immunity after the second vaccination. In addition, Corona variants such as B.1.351 from South Africa appear to spread particularly well among vaccinated individuals, according to another study from Israel.
Israel had already begun administering the vaccine Dec. 19, 2020. The vaccination campaign was very successful and rapid. An Israeli government agreement with Pfizer provided for transmission of vaccination data as part of vaccine shipments. The study is also based on these data during the period from January 24 to April 3, 2021. By Jan. 24, about 2.6 million people had received the first vaccination and 1.2 million had received the second vaccination. By April 3, about 5.3 million people had received the single vaccination and 4.8 million had received the double vaccination. About 9.3 million people live in Israel.
In Austria, the vaccination campaign is also gaining momentum and the vaccination rate is increasing significantly.
