The four vaccines currently available in Austria protect against severe courses and death in particular. But mild infection and transmission of the virus cannot be ruled out even in vaccinated people. A new study from Leipzig proves this.
Austria is in the final phase of the third wave. The vaccination campaign has reached a good level and summer is coming. Relief for vaccinated people has recently been implemented. In Germany, Leipzig physicians warn and consider quick relaxations not useful, because vaccinated people can still be contagious.
According to the study, despite vaccination, the virus is still capable of replicating in the mucous membranes of the throat. Immunized people can therefore still pass on the infection, even if they don’t feel it themselves. Researchers found that these antibodies are not present in the saliva of the vaccinated. The virus could therefore continue to multiply in the throat of vaccinated people and thus also be transmitted.
“The so-called mucosal immune system is probably not as activated by the vaccination as one would wish. “Chief Medical Officer Dr. Borte said.
Physicians from Leipzig led by senior physician Dr. Stephan Borte examined 100 employees and of the clinic who had received the two doses of the Biontech/Pfizer mRNA vaccination. Meanwhile, the levels of those who had recovered from active infection were monitored. For the study, blood was drawn and samples were taken from the pharyngeal mucosa to follow the development of protective antibodies against Sars-CoV-2.
The results were revealing, as the vaccinated group was well protected against the viruses. The antibodies in the serum were able to neutralize the British mutation B.1.1.7 to 99 percent and the South African variant B.1.351 still to 80 percent.
