More than 300,000 people have died in India as a result of the coronavirus. The country’s health authorities today recorded 4,454 deaths within 24 hours, bringing the total death toll to 303,720. More than 26.7 million infections have also been recorded since the pandemic began.
In India, the coronavirus has also spread rapidly recently because of mass religious and political events. Hospitals are hopelessly overcrowded, often lacking oxygen. Almost half of the registered deaths have been reported since the end of March.
Experts believe that the actual number of infections and deaths is far higher. Especially in rural areas, where two thirds of the Indian population live, the virus seems to be spreading particularly fast at the moment.
