Germany – The number of new infections is lower than it has been in months, but appearances are deceptive: fewer people than usual went to the doctor because of the Whitsun holidays. Meanwhile, the incidence is approaching the 50 mark.
Health authorities in Germany have reported 1911 new corona infections to the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) within one day. This is according to figures from the morning, which reflect the status of the RKI dashboard as of 06:05. For comparison, a week ago the figure had been 4209 infections. The RKI gave the seven-day incidence with 58.4 nationwide (previous day: 62.5; previous week: 79.5). On holidays such as Pentecost Monday, fewer people seek medical attention, which also means fewer samples are taken and there are fewer laboratory tests. Therefore, fewer new infections are reported.

According to the data, 33 new deaths were recorded throughout Germany within 24 hours. A week ago, there had been 221 deaths. The RKI counted a total of 3,653,551 proven infections with Sars-CoV-2 since the beginning of the pandemic, but the actual total number is likely to be significantly higher, as many infections are not detected. The RKI gave the number of those who recovered as 3,423,700. The number of people who died from or involved a confirmed infection with Sars-CoV-2 is now reported as 87,456.
The nationwide seven-day R value was 0.84 (previous day: 0.87), according to the RKI situation report released Monday evening. This means that 100 infected people mathematically infect 84 other people. The R-value represents in each case the infection occurrence 8 to 16 days ago. If the R-value is below 1 for a longer period of time, the number of infections is decreasing; if it is continuously above 1, the number of cases is increasing.
