Manny Pacquiao will be back in the ring on August 21. Two years after his victory over Keith Thurman, the now 42-year-old will put on the boxing gloves to face double world champion Errol Spence. Both boxers confirmed the fight and published corresponding graphics on social networks.
Pacquiao (62-7-2, 39 knockouts) will thus box for the first time since 2019. In the process, the politician from the Philippines secured the WBA super welterweight championship against Keith Thurman. After that, it became quiet around him.
Pacquiao also sat out 2020 completely due to the Corona situation in his homeland, after there were rumors in the meantime about a fight against UFC superstar Conor McGregor, which both also officially confirmed. After McGregor’s defeat in the UFC at the beginning of the year, this idea disappeared back into the drawer.
Subsequently, interim world champion Ryan Garcia threw his hat in the ring for a fight against “Pac-Man,” but the rumors faded very quickly, as did talks surrounding Terence Crawford. The continued time off also caused Pacquiao to be downgraded to “champion on hiatus” by the WBA.
Now the boxing legend returns against undefeated Errol Spence (27-0, 21 knockouts). The Texan won the IBF welterweight title against Kell Brook in 2017 and has defended it five times since, including against Mikey Garcia. He also won the WBC title from Shawn Porter in 2019.
After Spence was in a serious car accident a month after winning the title, in which he fortunately escaped with only cuts and no major injuries, he did not defend both belts against Danny Garcia until a year later.
