The Biontech vaccine also safely protects children between 12 and 15 years of age against Covid 19 disease. This is shown by data that have now been published, which were already the basis for the emergency approval of the vaccine in the U.S. in this age group and are available to the European Medicines Agency (EMA) for approval review. In the study, no Covid 19 cases occurred in more than 1,000 vaccinated children and adolescents, compared with 16 cases in the unvaccinated control group of approximately the same size. The scientists write in the New England Journal of Medicine that, for the most part, only mild vaccine reactions such as fatigue or headaches occurred after vaccination. The positive results also justify tests in younger children or other groups requiring special protection, such as pregnant women, they emphasize.
The EU Medicines Agency plans to decide Friday (May 28) whether children should also be vaccinated. Approval of Biontech/Pfizer’s vaccine for children and adolescents 12 and older is considered likely. So far, the drug has only been approved in the EU for people aged 16 and older. In the USA and Canada, children may already be vaccinated with it.
