Despite one of the most advanced vaccination programs in the world, hospitals in Chile are reaching their limits due to the coronavirus pandemic. The South American country’s intensive care units are operating at 96.7 percent of capacity, Luis Castillo, the Chilean health system’s critical care commissioner, told Cooperativa radio today.
Only 146 intensive care beds were still available in the entire country, he said. That is the highest occupancy rate in Chile’s history, Castillo said. Most of the intensive care patients are people with Covid-19, and the majority have not yet been vaccinated, he said.
Yet Chile ranks among the world’s leaders in the percentage of the population that is fully vaccinated, at about 53 percent. Chile secured vaccines from a number of manufacturers at an early stage. Vaccination is carried out according to a fairly simple prioritization plan without complicated scheduling – in health centers, soccer stadiums and vaccination streets.
