After heavy thunderstorms, an intermediate high pressure system provides a weather calming in the Austria at the weekend. According to the experts of the Austrian Severe Weather Center, it will be midsummer hot again at the beginning of the week, with peak values around 36 degrees in sight on Tuesday.
In total, around 240,000 lightning discharges were recorded in Austria during the stormy days from June 21 to 25 inclusive, of which 121,000 were in Upper Austria and 58,000 in Lower Austria alone. “In the past week, there were thus more than three quarters of the lightning discharges that are to be expected on average in an entire June” analyzes Manfred Spatzierer, chief meteorologist of the Severe Weather Center. The strongest lightning with a current intensity of 299 kA was measured on June 24 in the district of Horn.
However, with a westerly flow, the muggy air masses have meanwhile been displaced to southeastern Europe and this weekend an intermediate high named AFRA will ensure mostly calm weather conditions. On Sunday, local warm thunderstorms are expected only in the southern mountainous region from East Tyrol to Wechsel. Temperatures will reach a summery 25 to 31 degrees with the highest values in the Upper Inn Valley and the far south.
At the beginning of the week, even warmer air masses will reach the country from the southwest: “On Monday, there will already be highs of up to 35 degrees with lots of sunshine,” predicts Spatzierer. For the time being, local heat thunderstorms are only to be expected very sporadically in the mountains, only in the late evening the thunderstorm tendency will also increase in the Bodensee area. It will be even hotter on Tuesday, especially in the southeast peak values around 36 degrees are in sight. “Thus, the previous annual high of 35.3 degrees in Leibnitz on June 24 should already be surpassed again,” says the expert. June thus closes with a temperature deviation of more than +3 degrees from the mean as one of the 5 warmest June months in the history of measurements, although the first place from 2019 is out of reach.
Thunderstorms again
On Tuesday, the high-pressure influence slowly wears off, with it the tendency for showers and thunderstorms increases from Vorarlberg to western Lower Austria during the day. “Along the northern Alps, locally also strong thunderstorms with heavy rain and hail are emerging. In the south and east, however, it will remain largely dry. Wednesday will then be widespread unsettled with showers and thunderstorms, except in the extreme south, with the strongest thunderstorms to be expected in the central mountainous region and in the southeast. Temperatures will drop somewhat, ranging from 21 degrees in the Bregenzerwald to 34 degrees from Lower Carinthia to southern Burgenland.
July starts on Thursday mostly with average temperatures for the season, so another heat wave is not in sight for the time being.
