Windows 10 is down for the count, Windows 11 will soon jump into the ring. Microsoft has unveiled its new operating system, and there are some innovations – one involves the iconic Start button.

A new Start menu, Android apps and the integration of Teams directly into the operating system: a number of innovations are coming with Microsoft’s Windows 11. An overview:

NEW DESIGN: Ever since Microsoft introduced the Start button with Windows 95, it was found in the bottom left corner of the taskbar (at least when Microsoft wasn’t trying to get rid of it, as with Windows 8). Now it moves to the center – although users can change that later.

In the Start menu, a selection of program icons and relevant documents now opens instead of the “Live Tiles” tiles that came with Windows 8. Snap layouts” can be used to divide the screen into predefined areas for different apps. With “Snap Groups”, the new Windows can remember different app combinations.

ANDROID APPS: Yes, Tiktok and Instagram can run as Android apps directly on a Windows 11 PC. This is made possible because Amazon’s platform for downloading Android apps will be integrated into the new Windows Store. True, these apps are designed for smartphone chips based on technology from British chip designer Arm. But Microsoft also wants them to run on notebooks and laptops running Windows 11, with the help of translation software from chip giant Intel.

TEAMS: In the Corona pandemic, the need for video conferencing and better communication between employees has surged. Services like Zoom are booming. With Windows 11, Microsoft’s Teams software, designed for this purpose, will be found pre-installed right away, complete with its own icon in the taskbar.

SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS: According to Microsoft, these should remain minimal. Accordingly, Windows 11 needs at least 4 gigabytes of RAM, no less than 64 GB of storage, and a processor with at least two cores and a clock frequency of one gigahertz. “Many PCs that are less than four years old can be upgraded to Windows 11,” Microsoft wrote in response.

HOW DO YOU GET WINDOWS 11? In addition to new devices with Windows 11 pre-installed, Microsoft will also offer a free upgrade for Windows 10 users. The first Windows 11 devices are expected around the end of 2021, and the update plan for devices with Windows 10 installed is currently being created. It could start at the beginning of 2022.
