The burned-out wreckage of the military plane. 92 people were on board, 29 died
Cotabato – The death toll has risen to 29 in the crash of a military plane in the southern Philippines on Sunday morning (local time). 17 occupants were still missing, while 50 were rescued injured, military chief William Gonzales said.
The C-130 aircraft with 92 people on board missed the runway while landing at Patikul on Jolo Island, Army Chief Cirilito Sobejana said. It crashed while trying to take off again, he said.
At least 40 occupants were rescued from the burning wreckage. The search for more survivors continues, he said. “We are doing our best to rescue the passengers,” Sobejana stressed.
The plane had reportedly taken off from an air base near Manila and was then headed to Jolo via Cagayan de Oro on Mindanao island. It was transporting troops.
Many of the soldiers on board had just completed their basic training and were now to be stationed on Jolo. The island is located in the majority Muslim south of the Philippines, where the army is engaged in operations against the Islamist group Abu Sayyaf, among others.
