More than 183 million people have tested positive for the virus worldwide, according to Johns Hopkins University. More than 3.9 million infected people have died. About 3.1 billion vaccine doses have been administered worldwide.

Russia has recorded a new high for intraday deaths in the Corona pandemic.

Sixty-nine patients died with the coronavirus, the crisis management team announced Saturday in Moscow. According to the report, the number of recorded new infections rose to 24,439, which was the highest figure since January 16. In the largest country on earth in terms of area, the highly contagious and dangerous delta variant is rampant. The German Robert Koch Institute has therefore classified Russia as a virus variant area. The Russian capital Moscow and St. Petersburg, where many Swiss traveled to watch the European Championship quarterfinal against Spain, are particularly affected. In pictures of the fan zones of the city, many people could be seen without the mandatory mouth and nose protection. In Moscow, there were 116 deaths and 7446 new infections, according to Saturday’s data; in St. Petersburg, 110 deaths and 1733 new Corona cases. New daily highs are also expected in the coming days.

Corona measures in England
Because of the rapid spread of the delta variant, medical experts have warned that all Corona measures in England should be lifted soon. “As case numbers continue to rise at an alarming rate because of the high infection rate of delta variant and more people are meeting, it makes no sense to lift the restrictions completely in just over two weeks,” Chaand Nagpaul of the British Medical Association told the BBC on Saturday (July 3). As it stands, the British government plans to lift most remaining Corona measures in England on July 19. This would allow nightclubs to reopen and people to meet and party in unlimited groups. Even the lifting of the mask requirement is up for debate. In the past week, the number of new Corona infections in the United Kingdom has risen by nearly 75 percent, official figures show. The latest incidence was 181.

Fake “Green Passport”
Italian investigators have seized several channels and accounts of the chat app Telegram. On them, criminals offered a fake “green passport”; the Corona vaccination certificate that is valid everywhere in the EU. In total, ten channels and accounts were involved, which led users to anonymous accounts on marketplaces on the dark web, the financial police announced on Saturday (3. 7.) in Rome. On the online trading sites, sellers would have offered counterfeits for the digital certificate in exchange for payment in cryptocurrencies. According to the Italian financial police, the price for it was the equivalent of 110 to 130 euros. Thousands of users had registered on the Telegram channels, it continued. There, ampoules with an alleged vaccine against Corona were also offered for sale.

Californian’s Zoo begins vaccinting animals
The zoo in Oakland, California, has begun vaccinating animals such as tigers, bears, cougars and ferrets against Covid-19. According to the zoo’s announcement Friday (2/7), the experimental vaccine from U.S. manufacturer Zoetis will next be administered to monkeys, fruit bats and pigs. Until now, they said, they have relied on protective measures such as spacing, barriers and protective clothing for employees. They are “relieved” to now be able to better protect their animals with a vaccine, said veterinarian Alex Herman. Animal health company Zoetis plans to donate more than 11,000 doses of the vaccine to nearly 70 zoos and other facilities in the U.S., according to the release.

France is ramping up its vaccination efforts
With the Delta variant spreading rapidly, France’s Health Minister Olivier Véran warned Friday (2/7) of a new wave of Corona. Currently, delta accounts for almost one third of new infections in France, which means a significant increase in the proportion in a weekly comparison. In the future, therefore, there should be more flexibility in vaccination. For example, Véran said, it should be possible to receive the second vaccination dose anywhere, including at a vacation destination. The interval between the first and second vaccination should be between three and seven weeks, he said.

South Korea has recorded its highest level of new daily Sars-CoV-2 infections in nearly six months

On Thursday, 826 cases were added, health authorities announced Friday (2/7). It was the highest daily level since Jan. 7, according to the report. It was particularly worrying that there was an increasing number of infections among younger people, Prime Minister Kim Boo Kyum said. In recent weeks, four out of 10 cases have occurred among people in their twenties and thirties, he said. Seoul and the surrounding region accounted for more than 80 percent of the new daily infections in the past three days.
Concerned about the delta variant of Sars-CoV-2, the Czech Republic is tightening its entry requirements. Under government plans, all travelers will have to fill out an online registration form from July 9, a spokesman confirmed Friday (July 2). Those who are not fully vaccinated will also have to submit a negative PCR test, regardless of which country they come from, he said. The details of the new regulation were not yet known. So far, it is still the case that entry from so-called green countries with a low risk of corona, such as Germany, is possible without conditions. There is also an important change from July 9 in another point: one is considered fully vaccinated only 14 days after administration of all necessary Corona vaccine doses. Previously, this was already the case three weeks after the first vaccination.

400,000 people have died in India
In India, more than 400,000 people have died from or with Corona, according to official figures. That mark was surpassed on Friday (2/7), when the Ministry of Health reported 853 new deaths in the country of 1.3 billion people. Only the U.S. and Brazil have recorded more deaths related to the pandemic. Half of the deaths in India were recorded during the fierce second wave in April and May, linked to the more contagious delta variant first found in India. In the meantime, new Corona infections and deaths reported daily have dropped significantly again.
