The so-called Delta variant is not considered deadly, but significantly more contagious, which can lead to more hospitalizations, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). Therefore, it is now recommended that even vaccinated people should continue to wear masks. Current thinking is that the delta variant is likely to be up to 60 percent more contagious than the alpha variant, also known as the “British” mutation.

The increased risk of infection is of great concern to experts. According to forecasts, the delta variant is expected to dominate worldwide in the coming weeks. However, although the mutation has resulted in more hospitalizations, the number of fatal courses has not increased. What has increased, however, is interest in the efficacy of vaccines against the delta variant.

The same seems to be true for all vaccines except Johnson & Johnson: Only those who have both partial vaccinations are protected. After only one prick with Biontech/Pfizer or Astra Zeneca, on the other hand, one is only 30 percent protected. An overview shows which vaccinations protect how well against the delta variant.

Two doses of the vaccine provide 96 percent protection against severe covid disease. In addition, the vaccine provides 88 percent protection against severe disease in people infected with the delta variant. This has now been proven in an analysis by Public Health England.

According to the analysis, Astra Zeneca protects 93 percent against severe corona courses after full immunization. In Vienna, people can receive an initial vaccination without an appointment from July 5 to 11. “After AstraZeneca’s vaccine also proved to be very effective against the delta variant of the coronavirus and the National Vaccination Panel recommended shortening the interval between the two stings from twelve to four weeks, we will also follow this recommendation in order to give the delta mutation as little chance as possible in Vienna,” explained City Health Councillor Peter Hacker.

Both Pfizer and Moderna are currently working on booster doses that are even more targeted against the new corona mutations. According to the U.S. manufacturer, Moderna also stimulates an immune response against the Delta variant of Corona, which first appeared in India. Laboratory studies using the blood of vaccinated individuals would have shown the effect with other variants as well. According to the company, there was only a “slight reduction in neutralizing titers.”

Regardless of the delta variant, the vaccine delivers about 65 percent efficacy against coronavirus in all age groups. According to studies, the single vaccination is expected to reduce a severe course by 100 percent. In a statement, the company said the vaccine is expected to be 85 percent effective against the new delta mutant. Further, data had shown that immunization would last at least eight months before.

While the delta variant is spreading rapidly in Europe, a new variant, “delta plus,” is causing increased risk. The mutant, also known as “Nepalese,” also occurs in the “South African” and “Brazilian” variants. It is thought to bind more strongly to lung cells and to be better able to bypass immune protection. So far, the new mutant has appeared in the USA, China, Russia, Switzerland, Poland, Great Britain and India, among other countries. No cases are yet known in Austria.
