Several Austrians faced fines as they crossed the border into Slovenia on their way home from Croatia. A warning against alternative routes close to the border, for example via rural roads, now comes from ÖAMTC.

Crossing the border away from international border crossings could result in a fine of up to 1,200 euros per person for “illegal entry.” “Time and again it happens that travelers, in order to escape traffic jams, do not use an international border crossing – but another one, which, however, is only permitted for Slovenians,” explained ÖAMTC lawyer Verena Pronebner in a statement. However, by doing so, travelers enter the country “illegally” and violate the law protecting the Schengen external border between Slovenia and Croatia. Against the very high fines of up to 1,200 euros per accompanying person one cannot act afterwards against it, so the expert. The motorists’ club recommends making absolutely sure to use an international border crossing from Croatia to Slovenia – despite the risk of traffic jams.

The ÖAMTC refers to the following Croatian road works:

A2 Zagreb direction Macelj: There is a lane narrowing between Zapresic (Exit 6) and the toll station Zapresic.
The reason is construction work. Duration until July 11.
A6 Bosiljevo Il direction Rijeka: Only two lanes are passable between the tunnel Veliki Glozac and the tunnel Rozman Brdo. The reason also here: Construction work. Duration until August 15.
A6 Bosiljevo Il direction Rijeka: Construction work in the Vrsek tunnel will continue until July 11.
A8 Matulji direction Kanfanar: Construction work will continue here until September 30 – between Lupoglav (Exit 6) and Cerovlje (Exit 5).

ÖAMTC also refers travelers to the traffic jam cameras of the Croatian Mobility Club and to its own website. More information about road works can be found here.
