With more than 32,500 new CoV cases in one day, the United Kingdom has recorded its highest daily level since January. The number of new infections, deaths and hospitalizations each rose by more than 40 percent last week compared with the previous week, according to data released yesterday. The reason is the spread of the highly contagious delta variant.

7-day incidence at 256.2
Delta now accounts for nearly all CoV cases in the United Kingdom. The 7-day incidence, the number of new infections per 100,000 people in a week, rose to 256.2, compared with 6.7 in Austria.

Johnson: Testing instead of isolating
British Prime Minister Boris Johnson nevertheless plans to lift all CoV rules on July 19. During a questioning in Parliament, Johnson dodged many of the MPs’ questions. Addressing the announcement that from Aug. 16, contacts of CoV-infected people will no longer have to isolate themselves for days, Johnson stressed that the strategy is to test more than isolate.

London takes sharp rise
However, according to a BBC analysis, 4.5 million people could still be asked to self-isolate by Aug. 16 because of their contacts. The government expects the number of new infections could rise to as many as 100,000 a day because of the lifting of CoV rules.
