In Germany, more than 3.7 million people have been infected with the corona virus since the beginning of the pandemic. According to the Robert Koch Institute, more than 91,110 people have died. As part of the vaccination campaign launched at the end of 2020, 57.6 percent of German citizens have now received at least one vaccination dose, and 40.8 percent have been fully vaccinated (as of July 8).
Intensive care physicians in Germany believe they are well prepared for a possible fourth wave of Corona. The president of the German Interdisciplinary Association for Intensive Care and Emergency Medicine (Divi), Gernot Marx, told the “Handelsblatt” that he looks “with respect, but not with panic and a possible fourth wave this coming autumn.” Thanks to vaccination progress, he said, it will be “fundamentally different from the waves before.”
Family physicians oppose premature relaxation of Corona measures
German family physicians are putting the brakes on hopes for early and comprehensive relaxations in the Corona pandemic. “Instead of constantly speculating about new issues, everyone should rather make an effort to give the vaccination campaign the right momentum,” Ulrich Weigeldt, chairman of the family doctors’ association, told the Düsseldorf-based “Rheinische Post” on Thursday. The German Teachers’ Association continues to believe tests and mandatory masking in schools are necessary, at least at the start of the new school year.
Weigeldt said he considers the current debate about lifting the mask requirement “premature.” If it is foreseeable “that dual vaccination largely protects against infection, illness and transmission of infection, and there is a lot of evidence for that, then basic rights should be returned accordingly,” the family physician chief said. “At the same time, there will certainly be certain hygiene measures that should stay for now – and some, such as good ventilation schemes, make perfect sense away from the pandemic.”
Vaccinated Britons will be able to travel more easily again starting July 19
The U.K. is extending the recently announced Corona relaxation to travel. Fully vaccinated Britons will no longer need to be quarantined from July 19 when returning from countries with a medium risk of infection, Transport Minister Grant Shapps said Thursday.
This applies to British citizens who have been protected as part of the country’s vaccination campaign, he said. Only a negative Corona test is then required before returning home, followed by a second test ideally on the second day after arrival.
