Corona numbers have also risen recently in Malta. The country is now countering this with stricter rules: Only vaccinated people can enter the country.
The delta variant of the corona virus is currently causing concern in a number of countries, including Austria. Recently, an increase in the number of infections has again been recorded in this country, with the delta mutant already dominating. Almost two thirds of all new infections are already attributable to this much more infectious corona variant.
More and more countries are now tightening their entry rules for fear of a renewed increase in the number of infections, such as the Czech Republic, Croatia and Israel.
On Friday, meanwhile, the government in Malta also announced that it would tighten the rules for entry. The reason is also here a significant increase in the number of infections. As of next Wednesday, the new rules will apply:
Only vaccinated people will be allowed to enter the country.
As Health Minister Chris Fearne announced, travelers will have to show proof of vaccination. Children traveling with their parents will need a negative PCR test.
This makes Malta one of the first EU countries to require proof of vaccination as a condition of entry. Previously, this regulation only applied to vacationers from Great Britain. Travelers from the EU could enter the country with a negative PCR test.
The reason for such action by the government is the rapid increase in numbers. Most recently, authorities recorded 96 new infections within one day. In the previous four days, the number of cases had also increased significantly.
Most of the cases were attributed to travelers from abroad.
Here again, it was mainly students who visited Malta to learn English. As of Wednesday, the government will therefore also close the language schools for the time being.
