New infections would continue to rise, chancellor Sebastian Kurz announced held Friday morning. “Accept the offer of vaccination,” was the joint appeal of government members to the population.
A task force was set up by the government to monitor over the summer to coordinate on further steps to prepare for the fall and the colder season. In order to increase the vaccination rate, they are counting on an expansion of low-threshold services, he said.
The increase is “as clear as day” because it is known that the pandemic comes in waves, and so new infections will certainly increase massively as soon as the colder season arrives, the chancellor held. Vaccination is therefore the only remedy, he said, because government measures cannot be set in perpetuity. “You cannot restrict freedoms in the long run if there is a palliative remedy through vaccination.”
Health Minister Wolfgang Mückstein (Greens) pointed to the dominant delta variant of the coronavirus. He stands here now to protect against a repeat of a situation like last fall, he said: “This year will be managed differently, I guarantee it.”
Even though the numbers of new infections are already on the rise again, the mask obligation will be further relaxed on July 22: The MNS obligation in retail will then only apply in supermarkets, banks, pharmacies, post offices and gas stations, the so-called establishments of daily use – in all other stores and also in museums it will be waived if the operators do not provide stricter measures. However, the mask requirement continues to apply in public transport, as well as in hospitals and retirement and nursing homes. Here, however, the operators can also set stricter measures.
“Vaccination remains voluntary,” Kurz emphasizes. But “only those who are vaccinated are protected,” the Chancellor goes on to explain. “The decision that everyone must make personally is: Vaccination or infection.”
