Currently, a large thunderstorm front is moving across Austria from the south. Almost all of Austria is affected. For some parts there is also a thunderstorm warning. In East Tyrol, parts of Carinthia and Styria, as well as in Lower Austria, Burgenland and Vienna, heavy rain is to be expected. Wind peaks of up to 100 km/h will also not be uncommon. In addition, it may also hail in some areas, as reported by the Austrian Severe Weather Center (uwz.at).
Around 7 a.m., the second relay of the thunderstorm reached the federal capital as well as southern and northern Lower Austria, uwz.at reports.
In many places, the fire departments already had to go out on missions. In the district of Korneuburg, seven fire departments are currently in action because of a barn fire that broke out as a result of a lightning strike.
As the Austrian Insurance Offices stated, storms have already caused up to 55 million euros in damage in the first half of 2021.
