Coronavirus numbers continue to rise. After new infection numbers topped 200 cases for the first time in a month on Tuesday, as many as 300 new infections were reported on Wednesday.

In absolute terms, the numbers were highest in Vienna with 109 new cases, but in Burgenland there was not a single new infection in the past 24 hours.

There was no large increase in the number of people being treated in hospital for coronavirus infection. Currently, 114 people are undergoing hospital treatment, three more than the previous day. There were 33 patients in intensive care units on Wednesday, up from 39 the previous day.

So far, there have been 652,354 positive test results in Austria. As of today (July 14, 2021, 09:30), 10,726 people across Austria have died as a result of the Corona virus and 639,154 have recovered.

Travel as a reason for spread
One of the main reasons for the accelerated rise in corona numbers is likely to be travel – often across national borders. This is made clear by a look at the Epidemiological Clarification of the Agency for Health and Food Safety (AGES), which regularly publishes its cluster analyses.

Based on calendar week 26 – the period between June 28 and July 4 – the source of infection could be clarified in 68.6 percent of a total number of 638 cases. Almost a quarter of these new infections – exactly 23.6 percent – could be attributed to travel activities – a significant increase compared to the previous weeks.

School vacations not yet included
Most recently, travel to Germany and abroad had accounted for only a fraction of the weekly new infections. Since the end of May, their share of total infections cleared ranged from 1.7 (calendar week 22 – May 31 to June 6) to 5.2 percent (calendar week 24 – June 14 to 20). A further increase should be expected – school summer vacations have begun July 3 and July 10, respectively. Consequently, the latest AGES analysis, which covers the period up to and including July 4, does not yet include the associated travel.

Most Corona cases – just over half – still occur in households, but their proportion has recently declined steadily from 66.4 percent in calendar week 21 (May 24-30) to 52.2 percent most recently (calendar week 26 – June 28-July 4). Recreation accounted for 8.9 percent of the cases that occurred and were cleared during calendar week 26, and education accounted for 7.6 percent. 3.8 percent occurred in retail, and 2.5 percent occurred in labor.

No infections in the cultural sector
Strikingly, from the end of May to the beginning of July, not a single infection with SARS-CoV-2 could be attributed to the arts and culture sectors, according to AGES. Also in the hotel and catering industry there were hardly any Corona cases, the same applies to sports.
