The World Health Organization (WHO) is advising vaccinators against arbitrarily combining coronavirus vaccines from different manufacturers. “Individuals should not decide for themselves, public health authorities can, based on the available data,” said Soumya Swaminathan, WHO senior scientist.
“Data from mix-and-match trials of different vaccines are still pending – both efficacy and safety need to be assessed.” The arbitrary combination of different vaccines is a “pretty dangerous trend,” he said.
When citizens decide for themselves when and who gets a second, a third or a fourth dose, it leads to chaotic conditions, he said. Such decisions should be left to health authorities.
The WHO’s expert group on vaccines said in June that BioNTech/Pfizer’s vaccine could be used as a second dose after a first dose from AstraZeneca if the latter is not available.
