The Balearic Islands with Mallorca have recorded more new infections within one day than ever before since the outbreak of the pandemic. Within 24 hours, 795 infections with the coronavirus were recorded, announced the health authorities of the Spanish Mediterranean islands yesterday in Palma. There were 115 cases more than the previous day. The highest number so far had previously been registered on 19 January with 776.

The region with just under 1.2 million inhabitants had in the winter related to the population temporarily the highest values of all Spain. The regional government stressed that although an increase in the number of infections has been registered for many days, “the situation in the hospitals is under control”.

Since on the Balearic Islands, as in all of Spain, mainly younger people are currently infected and the courses of the disease are therefore mostly milder, the situation was relatively relaxed: Only 26 patients were in intensive care units on the four islands with Covid-19. The occupancy rate of the intensive care beds remained at twelve percent. In addition, about 50 percent of Balearic residents are already fully vaccinated.

The 7-day incidence was 265, according to Balearic authorities. Across Spain, infection numbers have been climbing relentlessly since late June.
