The Portuguese government presented its three-step plan to end Covid 19 restrictions on Thursday. For example, starting Sunday, the nighttime curfew between 11 p.m. and 5 a.m. that has prevailed until now will be dropped. The limited curfew for bars will also cease to exist, Prime Minister Antonio Costa said at a press conference.
Under certain conditions, sporting events will once again be allowed to receive visitors. However, these have yet to be defined. Home offices are no longer mandatory, but are still recommended.
“Vaccines have contributed very significantly to making these measures possible … but we can’t ignore the fact that the virus is still out there … the pandemic is not over,” Costa said.
He said there will be further relaxations in the coming months while more Portuguese are vaccinated. About half of the population has received all the vaccine doses to date.
The second phase of the opening plan is scheduled to start in September. Then the mask requirement will be dropped outdoors – but mouth-nose protection will still have to be worn at large events, as well as indoors.
