The latest developments

Number of Corona infections in Israel
In Israel, the number of registered new Corona infections has increased within a day. According to data released by Israel’s Health Ministry on Tuesday (Aug. 3), 3818 new cases had been confirmed on Monday. Previously, the number had been 2121. The percentage of people testing positive on Monday was reported at 3.78 – previously the figure had been 2.96 percent. Fully vaccinated people accounted for half of the new infections. Nearly 5.4 million of the approximately 9.3 million Israelis have been vaccinated twice. Recently, the Ministry of Health had presented figures showing that the effectiveness of the Biontech/Pfizer vaccine used in Israel has declined sharply since early June.

Delta Variant spreading in China
In response to the delta variant of the coronavirus also spreading in China, the erstwhile pandemic epicenter of Wuhan is having its entire population tested. As the state-run People’s Daily reported Tuesday (Aug. 2), authorities in the metropolis of 11 million made the decision after the first three infections were recorded in the city in just over a year. The coronavirus had first appeared globally in Wuhan, central China, in December 2019.

USA – 70 percent of all adults have received at least one vaccine dose
About a month late, the U.S. has met a vaccination goal proclaimed by President Joe Biden. As of Monday (Aug. 2), 70 percent of all adults have received at least one vaccine dose, according to data from the CDC health agency. This mark was actually supposed to be reached on Independence Day on July 4. However, the goal was missed then despite numerous vaccination incentives and a large supply of vaccines. In view of the rapidly rising number of new Corona infections, significantly more people in the USA have recently been vaccinated again.

60 million infections in Europe
Since the start of the Corona pandemic, more than 60 million infections have now been detected in Europe. This means that about 30 percent of all Corona cases reported worldwide so far are in the European region, according to the latest figures released by the World Health Organization (WHO) on Monday (Aug. 2). WHO/Europe called for more efforts to make faster and more balanced progress in vaccinating against covid-19. Vaccination progress varied widely among countries, with vaccination rates still low among priority groups such as the elderly, health care workers, those in long-term care and the previously ill in some countries, said WHO Regional Emergency Director Dorit Nitzan.

Spread of Delta Variant in Bangkok
Authorities in Bangkok continue to fail to control the spread of the delta variant of the coronavirus despite strict measures. The lockdown in Thailand’s capital and several dozen provinces will therefore be extended for an initial two weeks, the government announced Monday (Aug. 2). In mid-August, it will reassess whether the restrictions will be eased or extended again until Aug. 31. Travel to other regions is banned, and strict curfew restrictions are in place between 9 p.m. and 4 a.m. Shopping malls, massage parlors and restaurants are closed. Despite this, the rise in infections is slowing only slightly. Bangkok’s metropolitan region is home to 15 million people. It currently accounts for nearly 40 percent of all new cases nationwide.

Coronavirus in Australia
Due to the spread of the delta variant of the coronavirus in Australia, a strict lockdown is now also in place in the northeastern state of Queensland. The measures had been imposed at the weekend initially for three days, but will now be extended until at least next Sunday (8. 8.), as the health authorities announced on Monday (2. 8.). The lockdown also applies to the metropolis of Brisbane and the popular vacation region of Gold Coast. The people may leave there only in exceptional cases their houses. The megacity of Sydney in the neighboring state of New South Wales has been in lockdown for weeks because of an outbreak of the delta variant. The restrictions here have already been extended until the end of August.
